Hot Weather

Ottawa weather ranges from the frigid to the tropical. Ottawa weather also happens to be a favourite topic among locals, and heat stroke is certainly a hot topic these days.

How to stay cool during your visit to the ByWard Market
Keep cool - take frequent breaks when working or playing outdoors in extreme heat
Try a Parsley and Cucumber Oxygenating Facial at Daya Spa (200 Dalhousie Street). Check out Daya Spa and more Health & Beauty boutiques.
Wear light-coloured clothes and hat - they reflect heat from the sun
Pick up a great floral dress at Milk Shop (234 Dalhousie) so you can be cool and stylish. Eclection at 55 ByWard Market Square and Allegro at 53 William Street have a great selection of toppers, so you have no excuse to go around in this heat without a hat. Browse our many fashion retailers here.
Avoid strenuous work or sports activities during the intense sunlight hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Venture indoors to one of the many restaurants and food retailers with air conditioning during the hottest part of the day. You can even stop into one of the many galleries and take in the artwork, or stop by the Van Gogh exhibit at the National Gallery. Alternately, you may enjoy a moment with our Juno Piano at 55 ByWard Market Square. Know any jazz? Check out the full Restaurant and Arts directories.
Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day such as water, juice or sports drinks (Gatorade™)
Pick up an ice cold bottle of water from any food retailer or convenience store. If you have to, pick up an ice cream or gelato too. We won’t hold it against you. More details here.
Do not drink caffeinated drinks or alcoholic beverages - they accelerate the effects of heat stroke
Always take care of yourself in extreme heat.
