The duality of being a hyphenated Canadian is at the heart of Takeuchi's work. Balancing Act continues the theme of embracing conflicting views: the artist’s early difficulties of acknowledging his Japanese heritage and his subsequent acceptance of it. Abstract forms jostle with images from old Japan. While the paintings represent an uneasy search for harmony and balance between the two worlds, they are ultimately a celebration of his dual heritage.
