La Machine

La Machine

A first in North America

La Machine, an Ottawa 2017 Signature Event (link is external), will occur in downtown Ottawa and the ByWard Market from July 27 to 30. This event will bring giant mechanical creatures, thousands of visitors and five days of intermittent traffic impacts – including one for setup on Wednesday, July 26 – to Ottawa’s downtown.

During this event, businesses will remain open, but there will be numerous traffic impacts in order to create safe pedestrian zones for residents and visitors to enjoy the four-day street performance. Anyone travelling downtown to enjoy La Machine is strongly encouraged to review scheduled traffic impacts listed on ottawa.ca in advance.

Getting downtown

However you get downtown for La Machine, leave home early and expect delays. Access to some parking locations may be restricted due to intermittent road closures. Parking at City Hall is only $2 on weekends and evenings after 6 p.m. Bike parking is also available at various locations downtown.

OC Transpo, Traffic Services and the Ottawa Police Service will work together to mitigate delays and lessen the impact of rolling road closures on transit.

OC Transpo Routes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19 and all routes that operate on the Transitway will experience short intermittent disruptions to service or be on detour on many streets downtown while La Machine creatures pass.

Keep up to date by checking OC Transpo’s live updates (link is external) page or follow @OCTranspoLive on Twitter. Customers can also sign-up to receive email or text alerts by creating a subscription for selected routes at octranspo.com. (link is external)

On Saturdays or Sundays, customers can purchase a Family DayPass (link is external) for $10.25, which allows a family of up to six people, with a maximum of two aged 13 or older, to ride on OC Transpo the entire day. (link is external)

Five tips to help you enjoy La Machine

Move around

This is not a parade that you watch roll by as you stand on the sidewalk. As the characters move through the streets, you should move with them. For much of the performance, you will be close enough to interact with the stars of the show.

Plan to do a lot of walking and anticipate large crowds. So, wear proper footwear and keep track of your little ones.

Be patient

Downtown Ottawa will be turned into a performance stage and spectator gallery at the same time. Roads will be closed to accommodate the performance and the thousands of people expected to come watch. You will probably need more time to get around by car, bike, bus or on foot.

Beat the heat

If it’s a hot and humid day, you will want to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day – preferably water – and limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol. Also, look for shade whenever you can. Don’t forget to put on a hat and slather on the sunscreen.

Go shopping

If you want to get a full day’s experience out of La Machine, there will probably be down time between performances. Plan to do some shopping, stop someplace for a bite to eat, or explore a local gallery.

However, Sunday’s grand finale will be in a more isolated location, away from shops and stores. Bring your water bottles and we will have some water filling stations available for you.

Enjoy the moment

This performance is a first for North America and, possibly, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Savour the opportunity to see something you may never see again. Take some pictures that you won’t be able to take later. Have fun. This is gonna be cool.
