Giraffe African Art Africain
Giraffe is an Ottawa institution and is the largest store dedicated to African art and crafts in North America. Founded in 1974, Giraffe has been importing art and crafts from Africa for 33 years. Giraffe now has two locations: 19 Clarence Street in Ottawa’s Byward Market and 3997 Rue St. Denis in Montreal.
Twice a year Giraffe’s buyers travel to an average of ten countries in Africa to collect pieces directly from carvers and markets. Giraffe buys its goods from some of the poorest countries in the world such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Tanzania. We are dedicated to fair, ethical and equitable trade and provide income and employment to hundreds of artisans and small traders. Giraffe African Art is pleased to represent the essence of a proud African heritage to our many friends and customers.
A visit to Giraffe’s shop Clarence Street (at Sussex near the Art Gallery) is truly an African experience affecting all the senses: the sounds of African music and drums; the smell of mahogany carvings, basketry, incense and myrrh; and in every direction, The sights of of colourful handwoven cloth and wall hangings, glowing henna lamps contrast with beautiful stone sculpture, traditional masks, musical instruments and timeless jewellery.
Whether looking for a gift, a unique piece of jewellery, Jimbe drum for relaxation and rhythm or an authentic sculpture to decorate your house. In the quality, in the prices… there is something for everyone at Giraffe African Art.
