Winterlude unleashes frosty fun in Ottawa's ByWard Market

As the chilly wind sweeps through the charming streets of Canada's capital, Ottawa transforms into a winter wonderland during the 46th annual celebration of Winterlude. This year, the ByWard Market stands as a focal point for frosty festivities, hosting an array of events that promise to delight locals and visitors alike. Among the highlights are unique and engaging activities curated by local social enterprise Adaawewigamig, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of the region, and WinterStewed, a pay-what-you-can culinary event for charity taking place each weekend in support of the Lowertown Community Resource Centre.

February 2: Winterlude Kick-off

Adding a vibrant splash to the canvas of Winterlude festivities, local artist Falldown Gallery brings the captivating event "Colour Your World” downtown. With 19 sketched panels adorning Gallery 55, situated on the second floor of the historic market building at 55 ByWard Market Sq., this interactive exhibit invites guests to unleash their creativity by filling in the panels with an array of colours.

Another engaging event, "Drawn Together," promises to captivate audiences at George Street Plaza. This interactive art installation serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and unity. As the city becomes a canvas for creative expression, "Drawn Together" stands as a visual representation of the shared spirit that defines Winterlude.

February 3 & 4: A Celebration of Winter's Sweetness

The enchanting allure of Winterlude continues in the ByWard Market with a nostalgic touch – Horse Drawn Wagon Rides by Cundell Stables. Families and friends can hop aboard, bundled up in cozy blankets, as they traverse the historic streets, taking in the winter scenery and festive atmosphere. It's a magical experience that encapsulates the essence of the season.

For those intrigued by traditional Indigenous practices, Adaawewigamig presents a Deer Hide Tanning Demonstration. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to witness and learn about the intricate process of transforming deer hides into functional and beautiful pieces of art.

Adding a dash of sweetness to the chilly proceedings, Adaawewigamig also presents a maple taffy-pulling event and a maple sugar-making presentation. Maple syrup enthusiasts and curious onlookers can indulge in the delightful processes.  It's a deliciously interactive experience that brings together the warmth of community and the crispness of winter.

For those seeking a savory delight, Adaawewigamig has something special in store – Tacos in a Bag! Visitors can savor the fusion of flavors as traditional Indigenous ingredients are combined to create a portable and delicious taco experience.

February 10: Innovation on Display at Gallery 55

During the second weekend of Winterlude, the ByWard Market becomes a hub of innovation with the Chnge Mker Hub Demo Market. This event promises to display cutting-edge ideas and initiatives from local BIPOC change-makers and entrepreneurs.

February 17 & 18:  The Artistry of Wood and Ice Carving

As Winterlude progresses, the excitement in the ByWard Market shows no signs of waning. On the final weekend, Cundell Stables resumes its Horse Drawn Wagon Rides, providing another opportunity for a magical winter journey through the heart of the city.

On February 17 only, families can enjoy the 43rd Annual Accora Village Bed Race for the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa and a visit from the Ice Hogs, adding a dash of whimsy to Winterlude.

A Wood Carving Demonstration invites visitors to witness the transformation of raw wood into intricate works of art, showcasing the talent and skill of renowned artist Josh Dagg.

Finally, Tim Hortons presents Ice-Carving Demonstrations where skilled artisans carve breathtaking sculptures from blocks of ice, adding a touch of elegance and beauty to the winter landscape.
