What Does a Gradual Reopening Mean?

You will slowly see artisans, crafters, and other vendor categories return to our markets between June 2nd and 14th. This will be done gradually with the intention of getting people back into the swing of things in a safe and comfortable way.

Neighbourhood News:

Anti-Masking Protest forces changes in York Street Farmers' Market.

While Ottawa's farmers and small business owners vend safety at our markets, an anti-masking and anti-lockdown protest continues to be scheduled in Ottawa - simultaneously - putting Ottawans at risk and disrupting our York Street Farmers' Market on a weekly basis.

For the health and safety of our vendors and guests, we have made the responsible but difficult decision to reduce the York Street Farmers' Market by an hour so as to not overlap with the demonstration, meaning the Market will run from 8:00am-12:00pm along York Street until such a time that we can safely expand the hours.

See you Saturday morning on York Street!

Marchés d'Ottawa Markets is dedicated to ensuring the highest level of safety for our community members during our market season.

Community Spotlight:

As part of our Community Spotlight this week, we spoke to Fabienne of Péché Fumé, who will be a weekly feature of our York Street Farmers' Market.

Find P
éché Fumé Saturdays, 8am-12pm in ByWard!

We asked Fabienne the following questions:

When did you start your operation?

Fabienne and her husband started Péché Fumé in the Summer of 2015.

“My husband is a fish biologist who works on sturgeon, and he meets lots of fisherman through his work. He met Gaston [an experienced fisherman] years ago and the two of them fished often for fun. Since Gaston was 85 years old and retiring, he gave us his fishing license – with the condition that we prepare the fish ourselves.”

Fishers often choose to gut and sell their products to a third party that will then prepare the fish for purchase.

By catching and preparing the food themselves, Péché Fumé offers a hook-to-table experience.

“In later years we expanded to the Ottawa River to fish for other species.”

How did you learn? Who taught you?

“Gaston was our teacher for years and showed us the ropes. My friend Jimmy taught us to smoke and prepare the fish as well.”

What did you fish first?

“We began with sturgeon, which was the only product we offered for the first 3 years.”

Along with smoked sturgeon, they also offered caviar. When they expanded to the Ottawa River, they were able to diversify their offerings.

“On the Ottawa River, we expanded our product list to include carp, bullhead, black crappie, and catfish.”

What do you currently specialize in catching?

“Our smoked sturgeon is our best seller and is very popular. Although my personal favourite is the catfish -  I've had a lot of smoked sturgeon.”

What’s the one thing that’s surprised you the most about being a fisherman?

“How much work it is!”*Fabienne laughs*:

"There are a lot of steps that go into getting products prepared and sold.

We have to catch the fish, which isn't always easy as it's dependant on a number of factors. The process also includes fixing them, doing loads of paperwork for certification, and preparing the final product.

Finally, we organize everything to be able to attend the markets and sell our products”

What’s been your proudest moment as a fisherman?

“It's always a proud moment when we see great restaurants serve the products we work so hard to produce.”

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?

“Don't do it alone. Find a good group of people to work with.

It’s an added bonus if you work with ‘morning people’. You’ll want to avoid the afternoon heat!”
