Ottawa Markets Welcomes the Global Community to the Newly Opened Gallery 55
Gallery 55 launches in 2022 with an exciting lineup of exhibitions from international and local communities.
The ByWard Market has long been a multicultural hub in the heart of the Nation’s Capital. Ottawa Markets has worked to expand on the Markets cultural offerings by hosting diverse events and activations in 2021 as well as searching for underrepresented groups to set up shop at 55 ByWard Market Square and participate in the local economy.
We’re proud to announce that the embassy of Austria will be hosting an exhibition at Gallery 55 from May 10th-20th. This year, Canada and Austria celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. The Austrian Embassy in Ottawa and the Canadian Embassy in Vienna, in cooperation with the Austrian start-up ARTIVIVE, launched an artistic competition inviting artists to create animated art conceptualized under “Austria & Canada: a unique bond”. The winning art will be showcased with an interactive smartphone feature - adding a layer of augmented reality to the experience.
Gallery 55’s first event is open to the public this week as Algonquin College hosts its Student Photography Exhibition. Come by 55 ByWard Market Square from now until May 8th to see what the students have snapped this year!
Zachary Dayler, Executive Director at Ottawa Markets noted:
“Gallery 55 is an initiative we hope will grow over time - not only to connect Ottawans and visitors with the robust international communities that work and live in Ottawa, but also as a new home for local artists to curate and stage exhibitions.”
The Lowertown Community Association, the embassy of Spain, and the Day of the Dead Festival are all also scheduled to host exhibitions this year with exciting pieces for the public to enjoy.
With many organizations in talks to showcase their works, Ottawa Markets encourages all to reach out and get their art on display in the historic ByWard Market Building.
