Announcements:

Get ready to show some #OttawaLove on March 13th & 14th!

Let's be honest - It's been a tough couple of weeks, months, and years... It's about time Ottawans get together and show some love for each other and our wonderful City!

As the City of Ottawa has asked us to do something special, from Sunday March 13th to Monday March 14th Ottawa Markets will be hosting a special #OttawaLove event at 55 ByWard Market Square. Here are some of the deets:

🖌 Ottawans are encouraged to visit 55 ByWard Market where a large card will be installed in the historic ByWard Market Building and write WHAT YOU LOVE about OTTAWA on it. The card will be displayed over the summer.
🎨 As the GRAND FINALE of our #ScavengArtHunt, we will be hiding the rest of the artwork donated by local artists in the building at 55 ByWard Market Square. Finders keepers! If you're the first one to find the art, you get to bring it home.
🎶 Special musical performances for your listening pleasure.

Community Spotlight:

This week, we took some time to chat with long-time tenant at 55 ByWard Market Square and owner of Quichua World Market, Jacinto Anguaya.

Jacinto's shop is an independent Ottawa business showcasing handmade, fair trade goods from around the world.

Here's their story:

Ever since he was a little boy, Jacinto Anguaya has been part of his family’s small business. He comes from the mountains of Otavalo, Ecuador and a long line of Indigenous entrepreneurs and musicians - of which he is both.

His music is what brought him to Canada, but meeting his wife Jill is what made him decide to stay. Together, they founded Quichua Crafts Inc. and have been connecting people with the vibrant, colourful and traditional products of Ecuador since 1994. It was then, that the young owners Jacinto and Jill began a small scale import business in Ottawa, Ontario - Quichua Crafts Inc. - to support themselves as well as Jacinto’s family and community of Indigenous artisans from Otavalo, Ecuador.

The mandate was simple: handmade, unique, fair trade, and fairly priced.
Now, almost 3 decades later, they are still at it.

The heart of Ottawa was a natural choice as an outdoor vendor - and that's how they started in the ByWard Market. After having multiple stores in different parts of the city, the Market has become their home away from home. It attracts tourists and locals alike with its variety and vibrance.

Their top selling items are fairly traded and handmade products from South America and Nepal. They look for every opportunity to continue to support artisans who use traditional skills such as weaving, sewing, knitting, crocheting, beading and embroidering to create the products they sell for a living. That's how they do their part to keep these practices and cultures alive. Top selling items? too many to list! But during the winter, their alpaca accessories are very popular!

What does Quichua mean? (Pronounced /keyˌchˌwa/).
Quichua or (Kichwa) is the name of the indigenous people of Ecuador and also of their language. Similar, but different to Quechua - the two are often confused.
