Announcements:

Three levels of support coming to the historic ByWard Market building through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure stream:

Tuesday morning, we were pleased to host Mayor Jim Watson, Mona Fortier, Jeremy Roberts, and Mathieu Fleury as they announced that $1,690,000 in funding will be allocated to the ByWard Market area to improve its infrastructure.

Of the funding announced, $950,000 will go to our beloved ByWard Market Building to renew the building’s envelope and restore the windows. The project is also going to fund upgraded mechanical equipment that controls the HVAC system. Collectively, these major investments by the Federal Government, Province of Ontario, and City of Ottawa will help in improving the air quality and comfort inside the building, while ideally reducing operating costs over time.

This investment is an exciting commitment towards rebuilding of our cherished ByWard Market!

Neighbourhood News:

Community-led mural brightens up the ByWard Market:

MASC artist Jimmy Baptiste has begun a new project in the ByWard Market this week! 🎉

Ottawa Markets is proud to sponsor this mural- a project by the Lowertown Community Association in collaboration with MASC. In April 2021, Lowertown residents participated in a consultation and were asked what the market meant to them. This will be Jimmy's interpretation of that conversation.

A beautiful project for our ByWard Market. 🤗 🎨

Community Spotlight:

As part of our Community Spotlight, we chatted with founder and beekeeper at Apiverte, Sandra Bornn Smith.

Find them at the Parkdale Night Market on Wednesday evenings from 4pm-8pm!

We asked Sandra the following questions:

4c07ca90-35d4-c837-e397-fcdc78e283e9.jpeg

When did you start your business/operation?

Apiverte began in 2019, as a shared vision of a husband and wife team – Sandra and Michael. Nestled in the municipality of La Peche and stretching along the 5/105 corridor from Chelsea to Low Quebec, Apiverte has already brought more than 5,000,000 honey bees to the region.

How did you learn? Who taught you?

Sandra and Michael are self taught. Their background skills in design, marketing, and fabrication helped them with building their business. Sandra mentions that the agriculture side of things came naturally.

What did you produce first?

Sandra mentions that they produced EZHouses first.

The EZSystem is a combination beehive/beehouse designed to improve the user experience of the beekeeper and the habitat of the honeybees. EZHouses contain several EZHives and are hosted on commercial and residential partner properties throughout the region. EZHouses are further enhanced with painted murals by local artists encouraging educational and tourism opportunities to the agricultural sector.

What do you currently specialize in making?

Their current specialities include their Artisanal Honey and EZHouses.

What’s the one thing that’s surprised you the most about your industry?

The public's response to their partnership model has been extremely positive. Sandra was also happily surprised by the number of flavours of honey that one region can produce.

What’s been your proudest moment as a business owner?

"Having the ability to teach others, including our co-workers, what we do."

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

"Have a solid business plan and follow it."
