New Art Installations on William and York Street:
Ottawa Markets has invested in opportunities to bring the Lowertown and greater Ottawa communities back into the spaces that we operate. As William Street is closed to car traffic until October, we wanted to provide some colorful and fun art installations for the public to enjoy. William street hosts many artisans and artists who feature their wares, and there is also seating and tables for the public to enjoy as a place to enjoy and unwind. "Floor is Lava' is an interactive art piece which was produced by @falldowng as well as a giant checkers board/hopscotch/dance floor for children and children at heart to enjoy.

Community Spotlight:
As part of our Community Spotlight, we chatted with c-founder and farmer at Backyard Edibles, Madeleine Maltby.
Find them at the Parkdale Night Market on Wednesday evenings from 4pm-8pm!
We asked Madeleine the following questions:
When did you start your business/operation?
Backyard Edibles started as a backyard urban farm in 2015 in the West end of Ottawa. In 2020, Madeleine and Matthew moved their operation to an NCC farm property in the east end of Ottawa.
How did you learn? Who taught you?
Madeleine and Matthew learned farming practices through farm internships, WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), and volunteering on farms in Ontario and British Columbia.
What did you produce first?
Backyard Edibles began with market garden crops as well as growing microgreens indoors.
What do you currently specialize in making?
Backyard Edibles produces microgreens and edible flowers with many specialty crops and varieties sought out by local chefs and foodies alike.
What’s the one thing that’s surprised you the most about your industry?
“The interconnectedness of all things. Not so much surprised but fascinated. You can read about it all you want in books but if you really want to experience it firsthand, go into the field, crouch down amongst the plants and observe.”
What’s been your proudest moment as a business owner?
“We can’t really pinpoint an exact moment, but we’re ever so grateful that in 7 years we’ve learned so much and have connected with so many amazing people from our community along the way who have given us much support and the ability to do what we love to do…GROW FOOD (and sometimes pretty flowers ;) THANK YOU OTTAWA!”
What advice would you give to someone starting out?
“Expect failure, don’t dwell on it, learn from it and move on.”
