A ByWard Story: BeaverTails
Grant and Pam Hooker and Andy Cullen are the owner/operators of the BeaverTails pastry kiosk in the ByWard Market. Grant designed and built the kiosk in the spring of 1980 when it was originally placed at the corner of William and York. It was moved to its current location when the Market building was renovated in 1997.
Andy joined BeaverTails in 1984 at the age of 17 and helped Pam and Grant build company operations. He also served as a City employee within the Market management team from 2004 – 2014 before returning to BeaverTails as a part-owner and CEO.
Andy guided BeaverTails through the recent pandemic by making the numerous changes and hard decisions that most small businesses had to make. Grant, Pam and Andy are very grateful for the opportunities the ByWard Market has brought their way and, in recent months, have been delighted and relieved to see people gathering and enjoying themselves again on the streets surrounding their William and George Street location.

Community Spotlight:
As part of our Community Spotlight, we chatted with ByWard Market vendor, Serge Cleroux.
Find him in the ByWard Market - 7 days a week!
We asked Serge the following questions:
When did you start your operation?
I took over my grandfather’s stand in 1988. My grandfather taught me everything, from growing vegetables to seeking out unique produce items like wild blueberries, wild garlic, and fiddleheads. I started selling my grandfather’s fruit and vegetables at the age of 12, so for the past 41 years. The business has been in the family for 4 generations.
What’s the one thing that’s surprised you the most about working in this industry?
I love working with specialty products that cannot be found easily. I am always surprised by how much people want to help and support local businesses.
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
I am proud every time a regular customer comes back to say that the product was of great quality.
What advice would you give to someone starting out as a vendor in the market?
Being at the ByWard Market should be a passion. You do it out of love. It’s a way of life not a job, you can’t count the hours, because the hours are very long.
When did you first personally get involved with the ByWard Market?
My family has been vending at the Byward Market for the past 41 years.
What are some of the most popular/unique produce items you sell?
Everything wild: wild garlic, blueberries, and fiddleheads.
