Sharing the ByWord - January 27th
Announcements:
Notice: Marchés d'Ottawa Markets is aware of the upcoming "Freedom Convoy" and is taking steps to ensure the safety of tenants and market-goers.
We have chosen to close the interior of the Market Building in order to insure that capacity levels are respected. The businesses of 55 ByWard Market Square will be accessible from the street and will be open according to their comfort levels.
Security is aware of the event and will be stationed in the building. Hourly patrols will ensure safety on the exterior.
An increased police presence in ByWard has been scheduled to ensure proper traffic flow and public safety.
We thank you in advance for your patience,

Community Spotlight:
As part of our Community Spotlight, we chatted with Khalia Scott, owner of Eclection.
Find her at 55 ByWard Market Square - in the ByWard Market Building.
We asked Khalia the following questions:
When did you start your business?
Eclection started as Ear Gear in 1985 as a stand on Artist’s alley on William street just outside our door today. We’ve tried out different locations over the years and settled in here in 2000.
What inspired you when you started?
I began making jewellery from found objects with an industrial feel that was peaking in the 80’s.
Why did you choose ByWard as the home for your business?
My Mother and business partner Sue and I had a long history of coming down to the Byward Market to explore and have fun in the cafes (Daphne and Victor’s! ever heard of it!?) and shops (Ampersand another oldie long gone!). She had sold work in the outdoor craft market that used to be on top of the National Art’s Centre and the curated craft focussed project of Artist’s Alley was a natural fit for us.
What do you currently specialize in selling?
Handmade fashion accessories and jewellery - Hats, earrings, brooches, mittens, necklaces, fascinators, bracelets etc… Special, artisanal, local and exquisite.
What's your hottest product right now?
lol - this sounds more like a question that you might ask Amazon….
Our clients come back year after year for the work of their favourite local artisans: Fanfreluche hats, Ildiko knitwear, Gaby jewels, Kunda Art pins, and so many more that are exclusive to our shop.
What’s the one thing that’s surprised you the most about running a small business?
That even though we’ve been at this forever, local clients are still discovering us! Ottawa shoppers have tended to be shy and not explore much in the past and now with the movement to support local, it seems that we’re the latest find for a new generation!
