Sharing the ByWord - June 30th
Announcements:
Proceeds from vending fees collected on July 1st to be donated to Tewegan Housing for Aboriginal Youth
Reconciliation will not come without hard reflection, and collective action. While we work to better educate ourselves, Ottawa Markets has made the decision to donate proceeds from vending fees collected on July 1st to organizations working to support Indigenous Peoples and reconciliation. We will continue to do this every year going forward.
This year, funds will be donated to Tewegan Housing for Aboriginal Youth, an Ottawa-based transitional home for First Nations, Inuit and Métis women, ages 16 to 29. They provide a safe, culture-oriented environment where women can celebrate their traditions and acquire skills that will help them in life. They offer a wide range of programs and services including cultural programs, financial planning, outreach supports, counselling, assistance finding permanent housing and more.

Community Spotlight:
As part of our Community Spotlight, we chatted with David Schaub of the Ketchup Project and asked him the following questions:
When did you start your business/operation?
I started it 2017!
How did you learn? Who taught you?
I first went to culinary school in 2001 and have since worked in many kitchens and under a lot of chefs. My dad was small business owner, so he was a big influence too.
What did you produce first?
It all started with the Classic Tomato Ketchup.
What do you currently specialize in making?
I currently have 4 flavours of ketchup and we recently released a Caesar cocktail mix which I'm pretty excited about.
What’s the one thing that’s surprised you the most about your industry?
The adaptability. Watching a new generation of food service professionals navigate the way we've always done things with fresh eyes is really inspiring.
What’s been your proudest moment as a business owner?
Watching people taste my ketchup for the first time and seeing their eyes light up always makes me smile. It's a simple thing but it makes me proud to overdeliver on a taste people think they know.
What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Just start. Learn as you go. Stay inspired.
Find the Ketchup Project at the Parkdale Night market and learn more about them on their website.
